Continuing with the management wisdom for the book of Proverbs, my Media Management class discussed the importance of giving new hires a realistic job preview. One of the arguments was that with the high levels of unemployment in our context, it really doesn’t matter to potential employees that they may be signing up for much more or less than is written on the job advertisement. One of my students mentioned the many cases of employees who leave the Country to work as domestic workers in foreign countries and end up in dire straits or even dead. The other argument was that desperation for jobs is notwithstanding, it is important for employers to offer applicants a realistic job preview. That way employees take up the roles knowing exactly what to expect while recognizing that there are both positive and negative sides to each job. Still, hiring Managers constantly face the dilemma of how much to reveal to job applicants about the vacant position they are seeking to fill. A realistic job preview is a tool that employers use to give potential employees a transparent summary of what a job requires. The hiring Managers first make several decisions including; Whether the information given to the candidate will be primarily “descriptive” or “judgmental”, the extend of the information presented to the candidate, the selection of a medium for the RJP and finally whether the stage in the application process when to offer the RJP. In his book, Management By Proverbs, Michael A. Zigarelli, PhD, makes it clear that truthfulness should be paramount as stated in Proverbs 12:22; “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.” Here are some reasons why a realistic job preview is important. 1. Reduce Staff turnover- This is one of the outcomes of an honest outline of job expectations. The disclaimer here is that staff turnover remains high in the media sector due to competition. 2. Maintains the organization’s reputation – When employees find that the job is exactly what they expected it to be, they will tell their friends about it. They become ambassadors for the organization. 3. Increases employee satisfaction – It is worth noting that employees feel satisfied when they are in a transparent place of work with direct, honest and trustworthy employers. It pays to apply the ageless wisdom from the book of Proverbs in the workplace. As hiring Managers, let us keep in mind that the Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men (and women) who are truthful.
